Sfera has been involved in the number of projects at home and abroad such as Milan Salone and Maison & Objet, and introducing our intensive activities in a wider extent.
As the product of a collaborative project in support of those who were affected by the Tohoku Region Pacific Coast Earthquake, we would like to announce the commencement of sales for our candleholder, KIN URUSHI – Tohoku Support Limited Edition.
First and foremost, the project members would like to extend their heartfelt condolences to all those who were affected by the Tohoku Region Pacific Coast Earthquake, especially to those in the Tohoku region. More than 6 months have passed since the earthquake. Feeling powerless as the world struggled to grasp the full extent of damages; we spent that time thinking about what we could do with the design and production skills at our disposal. Initiated by the Claesson Koivisto Rune architect unit that travelled to the stricken areas as a member of an official Swedish delegation, they were then joined in by Skultuna; a manufacturer in Swedish brass, Kyoto Keikou Nishimura Lacquer Art Studio and design brand Sfera; based in Kyoto and Milan, to bring to you KIN URUSHI – Tohoku Support Limited Edition, a product of collaborative teamwork.
The KIN URUSHI – Tohoku Support Limited Edition is a specially designed limited edition variation on the KIN candleholder designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune and distributed by Skultuna. Designed and manufactured in Sweden, each brass creation has been carefully hand-finished in lacquer by the skilled craftsmen of Kyoto. To help raise awareness and encourage participation, we have set an incredibly special limited edition price for this occasion.
All of the proceeds from this product will be donated to the disaster area by way of support groups. Although small, we hope our candleholder project will keep the flame of public interest alive.
Sales begin October 28, 2011 at the Tokyo and Kyoto Sfera locations.
A limited 75 candleholders (15 of 5 designs) will be made available.

Claesson Koivisto Rune was founded in Stockholm in 1995 by three former classmates; Marten Claesson, Eero Koivisto and Ola Rune. The studio began as an architectural office but soon became multi-disciplinary, meaning both architecture and design would be practiced with the same priority. Collaborations with Sfera include the production of “Sfera furniture”, as well as the design of all three of Sfera’s shop buildings in Gion, Kyoto; Mid-Town, Tokyo; and Milan, Italy.
Founded by King Karl the IX in the year 1607, Skultuna has for four hundred years produced brass and sterling silver objects of the highest quality for both everyday use and for special occasions. Always with that same sense of quality, function and design, Skultuna today works with internationally renowned designers like Thomas Sandell, Luca Nichetto and Claesson Koivisto Rune to produce creations that will become the heirloom antiques of tomorrow.
