Adopting the traditional craftsmanship and classical arts to contemporary lifestyle, Sfera redefines everyday objects and gives birth to new forms of essential and functional beauty with timeless appeals. Exploring new values in modern life, Sfera designed Uchiwa –a flat, non-folding Japanese fan which have been a familiar part of daily life in Japan since centuries.
Sfera's Uchiwa is made by Aiba, a well known Kyoto-style Uchiwa maker with 300 years of proud history. Kyoto-style Uchiwa is characterized by its elaborate workmanship, graceful decorations and delicate patterns. Their artistic Uchiwa was once called Miyako Uchiwa, because it had been used in the Imperial court in the past. Since Aiba's establishment, each piece of their Uchiwa is individually made by hand. The quality of their Uchiwa is proved by their history, they make superb one of a kind Uchiwa. As well as inheriting and fulfilling the traditional work, Aiba has been and still is exploring ideas and developing new techniques, which led them to their famous Sukashi, cutout Uchiwa.
Uchiwa making technique
Kyoto-style Uchiwa's body and handle are made separately, which makes it distinctive from other Uchiwa.
Kyoto-style Uchiwa making has 16 different processes, for example - drawing an idea, manufacturing thin bamboo bones for the frame, cutting or printing the paper, supporting the frame by backing, and finally finishing the process to be complete. Every process is done by experienced craftsmen, most of their techniques are only done at Aiba. They use only high quality materials, especially for the bamboos, those are grown in the northern district of Kyoto for about 4-5 years.
